Know the rules you need to follow in your exams at Massey.

In-person supervised exams rules

Entry to the examination room

  • Pens, rulers, calculators, etc, must be in a clear plastic bag or a clear pencil case and may not be shared. Cellphones, smart watches and any other electronic devices with a calculator or transmitting function are not allowed.
  • Calculators must not be in cases. Unless specifically stated in the exam instructions, only non-programmable calculators will be allowed into the venue. Specific models may be used when explicitly permitted in the examination instructions.
  • Students must present photographic ID (driver鈥檚 licence, gun licence or passport) as proof of identity. Students who fail to produce photographic ID will not be permitted to enter the examination.
  • Food must not be brought into the examination room unless as part of a pre-arranged alternative arrangement. Clear plastic drink bottles are permitted, and may contain water only. Drink bottles are to be placed on the student's desk at all times.
  • Sunglasses, caps or hats are not to be worn in the examination room. The only exceptions to this rule are those required on cultural or medical grounds.
  • Earplugs or headphones are not to be worn in the examination rooms unless as part of a pre-arranged alternative arrangement.
  • Students are not permitted to smoke or vape in the examination room.
  • Students must not take any book or other written or printed matter or blank paper or non-approved electronic devices to their desk in the examination room. (This does not apply to "open book" examinations, or approved references. In the case of "open book" examinations, any written or printed materials including books, Acts, etc are permitted). In the case of 鈥減ermitted reference鈥 examinations, only the specified reference materials are allowed.
  • Any 鈥減ermitted references鈥 must be left behind for collection by the exam supervisor at the conclusion of the examination.
  • All watches, including smart watches 鈥 must be turned off (including alarms), and placed as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Electronic language translators are not permitted in examinations.
  • All forms of electronic listening and/or receiving and transmitting devices, including cellphones, must be turned off and placed in bags or at the front of the examination room.

The start of the examination

  • Students must place their photo identity in a position on their desk where it is clearly visible to the supervisor.
  • Late students will not be permitted to enter the examination room more than 15 minutes after the beginning of the examination

Behaviour of students in the examination room

  • Students may not leave the room until one hour after the commencement of the examination. Students may not leave the room during the last 10 minutes of the examination.
  • In the unlikely event that the examination room needs to be evacuated, students must follow the instructions issued by the Supervisor present.
  • Students may not communicate with another student in the examination room or copy from another's answers.
  • If paper is required for rough workings, a student should raise their hand and make the request to a supervisor. All papers must be returned to the supervisor at the end of the examination.
  • The examination will submit automatically when the allocated time has completed. Students should not communicate with one another until they have left the exam room.

Online exams rules

  • Students must sit the examination at the agreed date and time using the approved online invigilation system.
  • Students sitting online supervised exams (OSEs) must have a camera that is capable of being moved in such a way to give a complete scan of the entire room and desk surface.
  • Students must have a microphone which should be turned on for the duration of the examination.
  • Students must complete all required system checks, identity verification, and room scans before the examination begins. Failure to do so may prevent entry to the examination.
  • Students must use a private, quiet room free from interruptions. No other person may be present in the room during the examination.
  • The examination environment must be clear of all unauthorised materials. Only items explicitly permitted in the examination instructions may be present.
  • Students must remain visible to the webcam at all times and must not leave the room during the examination unless explicitly permitted.
  • Communication with any person other than the online invigilator is prohibited for the duration of the examination.
  • Headphones, hats and sunglasses are not permitted unless as part of a pre-arranged alternative arrangement. Unauthorised use of these may be considered an integrity breach.
  • The wearing of smart watches or use of cellphones during the examination is prohibited.
  • The use of unauthorised software, websites, applications, artificial intelligence tools, electronic devices, notes, or reference materials is strictly prohibited unless explicitly approved.
  • Students must not attempt to copy, record, distribute, or otherwise reproduce examination content in any form.
  • Students must follow all invigilator instructions promptly. Failure to comply may constitute an examination irregularity.
  • Technical issues must be reported immediately through the approved support channel. Students must continue the examination where possible unless instructed otherwise.
  • Suspected breaches of examination rules or academic integrity will be investigated in accordance with the institution鈥檚 academic integrity and disciplinary procedures.
  • By commencing the examination, students confirm that they understand and agree to comply with these rules.

Exam timetable codes

The letters next to your exam title in your timetable have the following meanings:

  • CP means calculators are allowed. You can use any type of calculator, including programmable ones.
  • CON means the exam is held as confidential and will not be released to the library as a study resource.
